At the suggestion of the Board, Dr. Baird attended at the Trinity House for a fortnight and was placed under the instruction of light keepers in order that he might gain experience of the recent Sautre Lamps &c. and the various descriptions and in their proper management; and he subsequently proceeded to the Works of Messrs Chance Brothers for a similar period to acquire a knowledge of the apparatus now being manufactured by them so that he might be the better qualified to assist in fitting it together on his arrival in the Colony.
